The Center for Marine Environmental Studies (CMES) was established in 1999.
Its origins date back to the two research activities in the mid-1980s.
One is the research on the fisheries environments in Uwa Sea on the western
coast of Ehime Prefecture. The scientists at the Faculties of Science,
Engineering and Agriculture of Ehime University started the joint research
responding a request from the local fisheries union. They revealed interesting
physical, chemical, biological and various other phenomena in the area
which were unknown until then and thus enabled them to arrive at new guideline
for fish culture which later came to a national guideline. The other is
the research on pesticide pollution in India conducted by the same members.
They reached an important conclusion that the pesticide applied in the
tropical countries is leading to global scale contamination.
On the basis of such tradition of interdisciplinary collaborative research, CMES was established to focus on and to suggest solutions for the societal environmental problems. Now CMES has two major research fields, the first one studying the coastal environmental ecosystems and the other division surveying the natural and man-made contamination by various pollutants in the terrestrial, coastal and open ocean environment. Following the establishment, from 2002 to 2006, CMES has got financial support from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) from their 21st-century Center of Excellence (21st-COE) Program. The excellent research work performed throughout the 21st-COE period has led to the selection of CMES for further financial assistance by MEXT under their Global Center of Excellence from the year 2007 to 2011. Apart from these, CMES has started and maintains an Environmental Specimen Bank for Global Monitoring (es-BANK) as an extended arm of its achievements. The es-BANK holds in cold storage specimens over 120,000 gathered from all over the world. these specimens are used for carrying-out research at home and also provided to research institutions in Japan and abroad in order to encourage high level environmental studies.
The CMES has now grown up to flying colors in the international arena as a global center of excellence and intends to continue and elaborate its home and outreach activities on environmental studies and also in related fields of research. For achieving its wider goal, CMES will embrace wide network of scientists from other research institutions as concurrent members so as to gain and utilize wider knowledge.
