We organized the JSPS Core-to-Core Symposium on One Health Approaches to Chemical Risk Management 2025.
2025.12.02
The Center for Marine Environmental Studies (CMES) hosted the “JSPS Core-to-Core Symposium on One Health Approaches to Chemical RiskManagement in Ehime 2025” on November 18 and 19.
The symposium brought together researchers working on a wide range of chemicals used in medicine, agriculture, aquaculture, and animal husbandry in South and Southeast Asia, with the aim of understanding their impacts on human health, the environment, and ecosystems, and promoting sustainable development. Approximately 40 researchers from five countries across South and Southeast Asia were invited, fostering active discussions on regional challenges and practical solutions, and strengthening international research networks.
Over the two-day program, about 120 participants attended, featuring 20 oral presentations and 50 poster presentations. The plenary talk was delivered by Dr. Jose Isagani B. Janairo from De La Salle University (Philippines), who presented an insightful and cutting-edge talk on predicting chemical activity based on molecular complexity, attracting strong interest from the audience.
In the poster sessions—led primarily by students and early-career researchers—a diverse array of studies was presented, including topics such as infectious diseases, environmental pollution, marine ecology, chemical risk assessment, and the development of genetic and analytical techniques. Researchers from institutions in South and Southeast Asia also shared work grounded in the environmental and public health issues facing their own countries. This stimulated lively interdisciplinary discussions, with many young researchers exchanging ideas on analytical methods and field challenges. The sessions served as a valuable platform for building future international networks.
This symposium enabled participants to explore the impacts of chemicals on ecosystems and human health from interdisciplinary and global perspectives, deepening dialogue across research fields. It represented a significant step toward advancing international collaborative research and strengthening cross-border research networks.
Although the host institution for next year’s JSPS Core-to-Core Symposium has not yet been determined, CMES will continue to provide opportunities for discussion and collaboration, further reinforcing international and interdisciplinary networks and contributing to sustainable development in South and Southeast Asia.
