We organized CMES workshop for Launching Interdisciplinary Communication and Knowledge sharing (CLICKs).
CMES has three research divisions: the Division of Environmental Dynamics, the Division of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology, and the Division of Ecosystem Health Sciences. Each research division has unique strengths that make interdisciplinary research possible. To accelerate the bottom-up collaborative research among the divisions, we have organized a casual research event named CMES workshop for Launching Interdisciplinary Communication and Knowledge sharing (CLICKs)!
CLICKs is the first event CMES members get together since the COVID-19 pandemic. The 1st CLICKs has focused on “Knowing each other” rather than sharing research data because we haven’t had an opportunity to have this kind of event in the past three years.
We had 63 participants and 42 presenters at the event. Most people were CMES members, but we also had a few people from other departments. The presenters, mainly Ph.D. students, share their research interests and what they want to learn from other experts using casual posters with illustrations and short descriptions, which is a very different style from a usual conference. We also installed a simple whiteboard that helps explanation. This unique poster presentation allowed us to have more master’s and undergraduate students who may not have solid research data by focusing on communications and discussion.
Most graduate students and postdocs in CMES are internationals. That’s why we asked the presenters to prepare the posters in English, but the discussion was done in different languages. Japanese students tried to discuss in English, and some international students/postdocs made an effort to listen and speak Japanese.
In addition, we set up a booth with excellent coffee and snacks from local places. Discussions and interactions also happened there.
The CLICKs was the first attempt to focus on communications and scientific discussion in CMES. We will organize the CLICKs again to strengthen the network among different labs, research divisions in CMES, and also other departments in Ehime University. It leads us to interdisciplinary collaborations. At the same time, we hope this event will make the young researcher’s lab life happier and more fruitful.
